Student Growth Playground

How to Use This Growth Playground

This interactive tool lets you explore how different BOY–EOY growth models work. It is designed for practice and understanding only — please do not enter real student names or identifiable information.

1. Select a Growth Model

Use the dropdown at the top of the tool to choose a growth model such as:

  • Graduated (Points or Percent)

  • Common % Flat Growth

  • Gap Closure (Half-the-Gap)

  • Quartile/Quintile

  • District-Based Growth

The model you choose determines how growth targets are calculated.

2. Enter Sample BOY and EOY Scores

Type in non-student BOY (Pre-test) and EOY (Post-test) percentages for any row.

Leave unused rows blank.

3. Review Categories, Targets, and Results

The tool automatically shows:

  • The growth Category or Quartile for each student

  • The Target Score under the selected model

  • Whether the student Met Growth (“Yes/No”)

4. Try Different Scenarios

You can adjust:

  • Growth percentages

  • Gap-closure settings

  • District average growth targets

  • Quartile expectations

This helps you see how changes in BOY, EOY, or district rules affect growth outcomes.

5. Clear or Load Example Data Anytime

Use the buttons at the top to:

  • Clear all entries

  • Load sample data to see how the model behaves with a full class

BOY–EOY Growth Playground

This interactive tool lets you explore how different BOY–EOY growth models set expectations for student growth. Enter sample data only (no real student names or IDs). Use the dropdown to change the growth model and adjust parameters. All results are for learning and planning only and do not represent an official TIA determination.

Model parameters

You may adjust these values to simulate your district’s rules. Percentages are entered as whole numbers (for example, 20 for 20%).

Student growth entries

Enter BOY and EOY values as percentages from 0 to 100 (for example, 42 or 68.5). Leave cells blank for rows you are not using. “Met Growth?” is based on the selected model and the target score.

# Student (sample name) Pre-test % (BOY) Post-test % (EOY) Category / Quartile Target % Met Growth?

Accessibility: All inputs are keyboard-accessible and results are displayed as text (for example, “Yes” / “No”) in addition to any color cues. This tool does not store or transmit any data entered by users.
