Crisis Hotlines for Emergencies

988 - Suicide Crisis Lifeline - The nationwide text and phone line for free and confidential suicide prevention support.  The Lifeline will connect you to local resources for prevention support as needed 27/7. 

741741 - Crisis Text Line - Text HOME to 741741 to connect with a volunteer crisis counselor 24/7. 

Local Mental Health Authority Crisis Hotlines - Toll free numbers for the Crisis Hotlines operated by Betty Hardwick Center, Center for Life Resources, Helen Farabee Centers, and West Texas Centers, which provide crisis assessment, safety planning, crisis hospitalization, and other Mental Health services to counties in our Region. 

 

 

 

 

  • #BeThe1To Website - "Be The One To Help Save a Life" provides visitors with a simple and direct 5-Step guide designed for anyone to follow to help prevent suicide.  Includes videos, print resources, and testimonials.

    Seize The Awkward - Provides sample questions and conversation prompts to help navigate discussions about suicide with anyone.

    Youth Suicide Warning Signs - Provides guidelines for peers, healthcare professionals, parents/caregivers, and other "Gatekeepers" to watch for and respond to signs of suicide risk in youth.

    Walk the Talk America - WTTA is a non-profit dedicated to bridging the gap between mental health and responsible gun ownership. Their mission is to enhance the perception of mental health among gun owners while elevating the standard of mental health care inside and outside of this community.  They conduct research with firearm owners, offer training for healthcare professionals, and a variety of other resources.

    Safe Gun Storage Texas - Resources to assist families in achieving safe firearm storage at home from the Texas Department of Public Safety.  Includes a "Safe Gun Storage Checklist", conversation guides, and recommendations for safe storage methods.  Reducing access to lethal means is a powerful way to save lives.

  • Region 14 Sample Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Protocol Template - Establishing a strong local protocol for suicide prevention is vital to school safety, and to the supporting school counselors and administrators with carrying out safety and mental health responsibilities.  Region 14 has designed this template to serve as a strong starting-point for districts to create a local protocol that is compliant with SB12 (89th Legislature.). Districts are welcome to click the link to create a local copy and edit according to your needs, or ask us about School Counseling & Mental Health Support Contract workdays if you’d like a consultant to aid creation of a local protocol.   

    Region 14 Protocol Template: Notebook Section Dividers - This resource serves as a supplement to the Protocol Template listed above.  The Mental Health Team designed this to use as a guide during protocol planning sessions, or as a walkthrough for staff members who may need to initiate the protocol for a student in crisis, but who are unfamiliar with the process.  Click the link to create a local copy and edit according to your needs, or ask us about School Counseling & Mental Health Support Contract workdays if you’d like a consultant to aid creation of a local protocol. 

    Suicide Safer School Roadmap - Texas Suicide Prevention Collaborative's planning guide for suicide prevention, intervention and postvention for Texas school districts.  Follow the guidance contained within this program to create a prevention and response plan for your district.  See the example below (Suicide Safer Sample Program) for a model plan.

    Preventing Suicide: A Toolkit for Schools - This PDF Resource from SAMHSA toolkit assists high schools and school districts in designing and implementing strategies to prevent suicide and promote behavioral health. 

    988 Safety Plan Template & SAMHSA Safety Plan Tearaway Pads - These two links provide access to two different formats of safety plans, which some school counselors may need as part of creating suicide prevention plans for their district.

  • AS+K Suicide Prevention Training - Learn about how to train as a "Gatekeeper", taking an active role in helping to prevent suicide in Texas schools and communities (from the Texas Suicide Prevention Collaborative.) 

    Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) - Reducing access to lethal means is a powerful way to help save lives of students and community members struggling with suicidal thoughts.  This link leads to the portal for an online self-paced course.  ESC 14 consultants are also able to provide this training in-person.

    Hope Squad - A peer-to-peer suicide prevention program designed to reduce the risk of youth suicide through education, training, and peer intervention.
